Choosing shutters for your home means more than just "dressing your
windows". High quality shutters are an investment in your home - their style does not
become out-dated as other decorating trends come and go. It is important that you take
time to find the shutter system that is best suited to your needs. An educated decision
will be your best decision.
This guide will help educate you on what our experience indicates are the most important
aspects of shutters. This information will help you know what to look for when you begin
"Shopping For Shutters".
Custom Shutter... We take the word custom
seriously.
From providing standard rectangles to arches based on your exact specifications,
custom to Park Avenue Drapery is not simply an unusual size. Custom is rectangles, bay or
bow windows, patio doors, tracks for sliding doors, vertical louvers, octagons, any color
matching and hand built arches.
Framed and Unframed
As a custom manufacturer, we provide shutters with a four-sided frame, a
three-sided frame, side hanging strips, custom designed posts, or panels only. Every
installation is unique and dictates which system is best suited for the application. Our
system provides a more precise fit to your window. The tolerances we allow ensure a truly
perfect fit which becomes apparent when the installation is completed.
Arches
Our signature. Many companies offer laminated shutters in standard sizes only. Some
purchase arches from other companies. We demand the best... so we have them done by
specially trained craftsmen. An arched shutter is one of the most distinctive statement
you can make with wood. It demands craftsmanship. Our arches are put together one step at
a time. The result is the most finely crafted arched shutter in the industry.
Bays and Bows
Many shutter companies will accommodate bay or bow windows simply by attaching
square frames into your casing. The fit may not be perfect, and solid wood parts butting
against each other mean a lot of light and view are lost and the shutters usually do not
follow the shape of the window. Our framed or unframed bays and bows are crafted to each
specific angle or curve in your window. Special center or corner mullions are used to
maximize your light and view, and provide a perfect fit.
French Doors - Sliding Glass (Patio) Doors
Park Avenue Drapery shutters can be customized for most operable doors - like
french doors or sliders. A special frame is used on our shutters, surrounding the glass
area on french doors. A modified shutter panel is being used for french doors where the
door knob is too close to the glass area. This is a feature which has not yet been adapted
by other companies.
Sliding doors are accommodated using 3-sided frames that surround the entire area, so
panels fold back when the door is in use. Because of our custom design we can also cover
extra wide patio doors. We also provide different fold-back options.
The Versatility of Shutters
Shutters by Park Avenue Drapery are designed to accommodate the needs and desires
of the most discriminating customer. Their flexibility in design and function solve
problems and can help you achieve an entirely different "feel" to a room.
Shutter panels can conceal wall space between, above or below windows.
Choosing a divider rail will allow louvers above and below the rail to operate
independently. Most shutter companies place the rail in the center - we give you a choice
and place the divider rail where YOU want it. Extending shutters from a window down to the
floor will add height to a room with a low ceiling. Then, by keeping the louvers below the
divider rail closed will conceal wall space behind them.
Vertical louvers can add a dramatic look when used as room dividers.
We can paint or stain your shutters in almost any color or shade of stain. By choosing a
color or stain you will make a statement which will reflect your personal taste.
Track systems (which are not being offered by other companies) allow you to use shutters
as partitions between rooms.
The Fashion of Shutters
First and foremost, any consumer chooses window coverings that appeal to the eye.
Shutters are specified when the consumer appreciates the elegant look and feel. Plain and
simple. The added benefit of light control, energy efficiency, maintaining views and
versatility are icing on the cake.
Our shutters make a statement - richness, elegance, taste. Our louver sizes, colors, and
finishes make it easy for every customer to specify the look that best fits their needs.
And the fashion of shutters will never die. They have been around for hundreds of years,
and will continue to be an important choice when it comes to "dressing your
windows".
Product Design... Start with the best!
No matter how beautiful the product, bad design will cause the overall effect of
any product to diminish. We have designed our shutters to maintain their look and
function throughout the years. We build them for the future - not just for today and
tomorrow.
Basic Economics Dictates That Quality Must Be
Paid For...
If you insist on quality the way we do, you learn that you get what you pay for.
"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is
forgotten!"
By choosing shutters from Park Avenue Drapery Corp., you are recognizing that you are
investing in the value of your home or business. Following are several key elements that
we have incorporated into our shutters, to protect your investment.
WOOD
- Custom shutters
represent a large investment in the overall look of your home or office. You want this
look to last. While many woods will warp or crack, we start with Yellow American Poplar or
Basswood, a member of the hardwood family. It has a very close grain that holds color
extremely well. Most importantly, as a hardwood, it will not "bleed" like soft
woods such as pine. Woods that bleed can cause paint discoloration, wood swelling and
warpage - characteristics you do not want in your shutters.
When it comes to stained shutters, we use only clear pine or oak, whatever you specify.
MOLDING
- Our shutter
components are milled to OUR specifications - frames, louvers, stiles and rails. Unless
the mill can comply with our strict requirements, we will not buy from them. This demand
for quality allows us to control the tolerances we demand and insures that the product you
purchase is the product we designed. The wood is kiln dried to 8% moisture content. Any
more and the wood becomes too soft, any less and the wood becomes too brittle.
LOUVER TENSION
- We use
ONLY nylon pins to pivot the louvers. Nylon pins eliminate the problem of shrinking,
swelling and wear associated with using wood dowels on the louvers. To control the tension
of the louvers we use stainless steel springs which form an intregal part with the nylon
pins. We do NOT use single adjustment screws which would give an unbalanced tension
adjustment. With our method you will never have to worry about adjusting the louver
tension on your shutters.
STILES and RAILS
-
We
use a proprietary method of joining the stiles and rails, similar as the method used in
fine furniture.
FINISHING - All our shutters are hand-sanded and finished on site in our facility. We do
NOT subcontract this important operation. Finish is one of the most important features of
your shutter. It is what the world will see and touch. A superior finish demands quality
control, and the "feel" of our finish will tell you how much attention and labor
we give to finishing your shutters. No one can match Park Avenue Drapery Corp.
attention to detail in this area.
Warranty
Park Avenue Drapery Corp.'s shutters carry a product lifetime warranty on the
material and construction.
Not many shutter companies offer a lifetime warranty on the construction of their shutters
- but then they don't build them like we do. We feel that every step of our process is
important, so we do not compromise anywhere. Other companies use bits and pieces of what
we have made standard in our shutter, and no one else does everything that we do.
Installation... The job ain't over till the
shutter's in the window.
Why produce the best product on the market if it ends up looking inferior in your
window? Proper installation is the key to ensuring that your shutters look and fit the way
they were built to fit. An inexperienced installer can create a nightmare if they don't
have the proper skills.
Carpentry or wood-working skills are essential because most windows are not level or
square, and adjustability is almost always needed to achieve a truly perfect fit. ALL our
installers are factory trained. We have been, and will continue to be the industry leader
in installer training.
Customer Service... second to none.
Not all companies are successful. But all successful companies have one thing in
common - excellent customer service.
We take customer service seriously. We constantly evaluate our effectiveness. We
communicate with our customers to insure they are informed and satisfied. If we say it
will happen, count on it.
Before you finally decide... check
everything.
We hope this outline has helped you understand more about what to look for when you
are interested in wood shutters. Any quality shutter you choose is going to be an
investment into your home or business, and we want to help you make the best decision for
your specific situation.
